EMWA Judges 2018

We are proud to present the Judges for this year's East Midlands Women's Awards (EMWA).

Our judges are experienced and successful in their fields, and bring their vast knowledge to EMWA, ensuring that the high standard and quality of decision making we achieved last year is maintained.

We proudly present:

Kevin Urquhart 

Kevin Urquhart is Managing Director and Founder of Fraser Urquhart Media – a unique hybrid of Publicity and Publishing Consultancy.

Since 1999, they are proud publishers of the iconic SIXTY9 DEGREES, dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND and dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL magazines.

Kevin is one of the most experienced and respected Publishers in the Midlands with an 18-year track record and the hottest Black Book of Contacts in the industry.  He is particularly proud to work with brands such as Bentley, Rolls Royce, Malmaison, Rolex, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Tommy Hilfiger, Hyatt Regency and Paul Smith, as well as many of the region’s most interesting independents across the food, drink and hospitality sectors.

Beverley Sankey

Entrepreneur /Lifestyle Mentor specialising in the Health and Wellness Industry with Pure Safe and Beneficial products for ordinary people at affordable cost.  Teaching people how to redirect their existing spend on everyday consumable personal care products and nutritional supplements and by doing so create a residual income.
21st business model a simple and uncapped secure method of building and growing an unlimited pot for retirement.

Bev has a background of 28 years Business Ownership in manufacturing jewellery and hair accessories to high street Retailers in the UK, such as Harrods, Liberty, Boots, Monsoon, Next, and John Lewis.  In the USA, Bev also supplied Saks 5th Avenue, CK Tang Singapore, and other high-end establishments.  She trained Silversmith and jeweller.  Bev also has a BA Hons.

 

 


Sonia Thompson

Sonia Thompson is an international Organisational Development Consultant. She began her company after a successful career in higher education.

Sonia sits on the Board of several organisations, and has been active in the community helping to establish a number of charities, social enterprises, and two women’s refuges. She is the Chair of WIMUK, the organisers of this year’s East Midlands Women’s Awards.

Sonia is passionate about women and their personal and professional development. She believes woman power if only allowed to reach its potential could change the world.

 

  

 

 


Sophie Shardlow

Editor, BBC Radio Leicester

Sophie has been a leader in the BBC for over 15 years taking on BBC Radio Leicester last year.   She is passionate about creating relevant and entertaining radio which is part of life in Leicester.   Sophie believes a key to the success of the station is to showcase sassy, smart woman on air!  She also mentors and supports women in their careers.

Previously she was the Managing Editor at BBC Radio Nottingham and a producer at BBC Radio 4.  She has a busy home with three children and a dog, so the work-life juggle is very much part of her life!


Dr. Vijay Sharma

Vijay Sharma is former Head of BBC Asian Network Digital Radio Station, a station she started developing from its roots in Local BBC Radio Leicester and transformed this into a service aimed at the migrant population in the 80/90s, to a National British Asian Radio Station, serving the British Asian diaspora.

Vijay completed her Masters in Social Work from Warwick University and practiced Social Work in Coventry and Nottinghamshire before joining Leicestershire County Council as a Race Relations Advisor, working with the Chief Executive.

Vijay has served as a Non- Executive Director on East Midlands Strategic Health Authority (SHA), the Midlands & East SHA, West Midlands Government Office and Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Trust.
Vijay has served as a Trustee with Gingerbread, the Caxton Foundation, Leicester Theatre Trust -the Curve Theatre and Interim Chair of Health Watch Leicestershire.

Currently, Vijay serves as Non-Executive Director on the East Midlands Ambulance NHS Trust (where she Chairs Trusts Workforce Committee) a Council Member at the University of Leicester (serving on the Audit, Nominations and Development Board)
A Trustee Rainbows, Stakeholder Governor Kettering General Hospital, Board Member of Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation, Steering Group Member of Women in Philanthropy and Leicester Children's Hospital  Campaign Board Member.
Vijay is studying for a Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring and developing her Coaching practice.

Vijay has served on the Boards of many voluntary sector originations in East Midlands such as The Highfields and Belgrave Law Centre, Ajani Women's Project and Asian Sheltered and Residential Accommodation.

Vijay and the BBC Asian Network Radio Station has won many national broadcasting awards (including the Sony Radio Awards) and was awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees from the University of Leicester and De Montfort University for her pioneering work in broadcasting.


Pete Frost 

Pete Frost is an award-winning founder and company partner of 2 Digital Marketing Agencies that integrate with businesses across the UK.

With over 8 years experience in the digital marketing, he has had the pleasure in supporting 100’s of business achieve a return from their online marketing and is continuing to shape the face of the digital marketing sector locally.

In addition, he is a trustee of a leading mental health charity that provides secure and stable homes for people in need of acute mental health support across Leicestershire.


 

Professor Turi King

Turi King is a Canadian who did her undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge before moving into genetics at the University of Leicester for her masters and PhD.  Her work over the last 20 years has been combining genetics with forensics, history, and archaeology.

She is perhaps best known for leading the genetic analysis in the King Richard III case. She is currently leading the genetic analysis in the Sir George Yeardley case in the U.S.

Professor King was awarded the EMWA Outstanding Woman in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) 2017.

She is also the proud mother of four children.
